As a school, we all commemorated VE day by wearing the colours of the union Jack, participating in a live online assembly to learn more about Victory in Europe and by showing our respect for all those involved, with a two minute silence.

As part of continued celebrations on the lead up to the 80th anniversary of VE day, children across the school each contributed to create class bunting, focused on the themes of peace, remembrance and gratitude. Each class' creation will be collected by Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals, to be displayed across the trust.

To begin commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day, coming up on the 8th May, the History Pupil Voice children were lucky enough to be invited to Barking Town Hall's flag raising ceremony and even helped raise the flag! After this, the children were invited inside, where they had the opportunity to chat with the Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, who also introduced them to the future mayor. They enjoyed tasty refreshments while they met many councillors and heard about their roles. It was such a special occasion, which all of the children thoroughly enjoyed being a part of.

This week, we've been busy celebrating local history day, learning more about where we live! Key stage 1 and 2 enjoyed tours of Barking Market and Barking Abbey, packed full of information about how these have changed over time. These tours were followed up by workshops that enabled us to dress up, explore local historical sources of evidence and also create our own tapestry, poetry and art to take home. Alongside all of this, we researched different famous figures from Barking, which opened discussion to our own career aspirations and how we too can become successful.

Year 3 were so lucky to visit the Natural History Museum as part of their topic: ‘Rocks, Relics and Rumbles’. The children got to explore the exciting world of volcanoes and earthquakes and their effects on society in an action-packed science show. They investigated geological forces from deep within the Earth using interactive demonstrations. They even got to make a real earthquake and pour lava and save all of the people of ‘Volcano Town’ from a volcanic eruption.

Year 5 enjoyed a wonderful trip to Brentwood Cathedral. They were lead on a very informative tour by the Father Matúš, who taught them about the architecture, history and tradition of the Cathedral., giving the children the opportunity to ask questions

Year 5 had the exciting opportunity to take part in a workshop 'The Blitz through Connie's eyes' ran by the Museum of London. The children got to learn all about the Blitz and experience what it would have been like to live at that time.

Year 2 have been learning about significant individuals from our local history. They learnt about the life and work of Captain James Cook. Today, Year 2 had the opportunity to visit St. Margarets are Church in Barking Abbey. This church was a very important part of Captain James Cook’s history as he married his wife Elizabeth Batts there 260 years ago in 1762. It was a brilliant way for us to feel part of our local history.

05.05.23 - Year 4 Visit to the British Museum

As a part of our Educational trip on Ancient Egypt, the children visited the British Museum. They looked at the beautiful artefacts from Egypt which enriched their knowledge about Egyptian history, culture, people and many other interesting things. The Egyptian objects told them a story of life and death in the ancient Nile Valley. They also attended a presentation to explore the famous tomb-painting of Nebamun hunting in the marshes. On the whole the children along with the adults enjoyed their trip to the British Museum.

01.02.23 - Time Capsule

The children in Year 2 went across to the Abbey to take part in burying the time capsule that the children all took part in creating. This project involved many local schools in the community. The children were very excited to think that the time capsule will be dug up in years to come.
