Year 4

Yr4 DT Topic - Statues, statuettes and figurines are carved or cast three-dimensional sculptures that often show the human form. They are made to celebrate or commemorate significant people and events. This project taught our children about the 3-D representation of the human form, including statues, statuettes and figurines. They studied examples from ancient civilisations, and used their clay skills to create a Sumer-style figurine. Statues, statuettes and figurines were a significant part of life in ancient Sumer. Inlaid eyes and clasped hands characterised figures. Male heads are frequently shown bald but sometimes with beards, while female figures had varied hairstyles or headdresses. Facial characteristics were similar.

Yr 4 topic on Islamic Art - Islamic art covers all the religious and secular artwork created in countries that used to be part of the Islamic Empire. Islamic art makes objects beautiful with pattern and shape. It does not depict people. Features of Islamic art include calligraphy, arabesque and geometric patterns. Islamic art decorates many surfaces, including the walls and ceilings of mosques. In this project children learnt about the features of Islamic art. They made geometric patterns and motifs on paper, with fabric and in clay. They used their learning to create a high relief clay tile, decorated with geometric patterns. Techniques used to create a 3-D form from clay include coiling, pinching, slab construction and sculpting. Carving, slip and scoring can be used to attach extra pieces of clay. Mark making can be used to add detail to 3-D forms.
