Chair of Governor Extra Ordinary Minister Visit to Year 1 and 2

As part of the children's Communion RE Topic in Key Stage we were delighted to welcome Glenda Spencer our Chair of Governors to talk to the children about her role as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and her ministry. The children were able to ask questions to Glenda about her this important role and why she wanted to be involved in this ministry and how it helps them in their lives.

Important Roles in the Church 

 

Olive Class helped Veronica one of the Parishioners clean St Mary and St Ethelburga's Church serving the community living out their Gospel Values. This experience helped developed their understanding of the roles needed within the parish.

Olive Class Fr Young Topic Visit

On Friday Year 4 welcomed Fr Young into their class to learn about the Communion Rite. Fr Young describe with increasing detail the steps involved in the Communion Rite. He also share his wealth of knowledge and understanding of the Communion Rite and made links to how this comes from our beliefs.  Why not challenge your child at home and ask why we begin the Communion Rite with the Lords Prayer?

As part of the Year 3 current RE Communion topic Fr Young help us to describe with detail and give reasons for the readings during the liturgy of the word. He helped us to understand more about the difference in the way the Gospel is proclaimed and who it reads it. Fr Young explained the ways in which the Gospel is ‘Good News’ for us the followers of Jesus. At home can you think about what ways is the Gospel ‘Good News’ for the followers of Jesus? 

25.01.2023 - EYFS visit to St. Mary & St. Ethelburga Catholic Church

 

As part of our RE topic ‘Celebrating’, Reception visited our Parish church, St. Mary and St. Ethelburga Catholic Church. Canon Young kindly showed the children around the church and pointed out some of the most important features of the church building. Reception were able to look closely at the font, lectern, altar and tabernacle. At the end of our visit, we had the opportunity to pray together with Canon Young before we ventured back to school.

Beech Class Educational Visit to Brentwood Cathedral 

 

On Friday 20th January 2023 Beech Class had the opportunity to visit Brentwood Cathedral as part of their Community Topic in RE. The children were provided with a detailed tour of the inside of the Cathedral with Fr Martin who is the Dean of the Cathedral. The children learnt about the importance of what it means to belong to a church community and the wider church community.  We would like to thank Fr Martin for volunteering his time to impart his wealth of knowledge about the Cathedral and it's hugely important role that it plays in the community and the diocese. 

19.01.2023 Fr Young Visit to Year 2 

 

Today Rose and Poppy class had a wonderful visit from Canon Young where together they explored a variety of important books that are used at Church. Father Young explained in great detailed the reasons why the books were important. Following Fr Young's visit the children were able to use a range of religious words and phrases to describe and give reasons for the importance of these books used at Church. 

18.01.2023 Olive Class Visit to St Margaret's Community Centre 

 

As a part of our R.E ‘Community’ topic, Olive class children were provided with an amazing opportunity to visit St Margaret’s Centre. The tour was lead by Carol, who is a volunteer there and helps the homeless, by providing them with food and shelter. Carol showed the children around the church and explained the history of the Abbey. In addition, she spoke about her charitable work and how she loved volunteering her time to the service of the Church. The children were inspired by her selfless nature, kindness and commitment to community life. 

17.01.2023 Lily Class Visit to Church 

 

Today Lily Class attended their first 'Mass of the Day' with the pupils from Beech Class. After Mass, Fr Canon Young as part of the children's RE 'Community Topic' showed the pupils' around the church and explained to them about the special roles different people have for Sunday Mass. For example; the greeters, the priest, deacon, altar servers, readers, those who take the collection, bring up the bread and wine to the altar and the extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. He also explained how some people help prepare the church for Mass on Sunday e.g. flower arrangers and those who clean the church. Why not ask your child at home if they can tell you about the special roles some people have at Mass. Everyone in Lily Class would like to thank Canon Young for giving up his time to help teach the children learn more about the Church's key role in the Community and our Parish. 

St Mary and St Ethelburga's Catholic Church

 

St Mary and St Ethelburga's Catholic Church is our local Parish Church.  Canon Young is our local Parish Priest. We have very close links with St Mary and St Ethelburga and Canon Young visits our school regularly to lead liturgies and reconciliation for our KS2 pupils.

On special feast days, holy days of obligation and for the beginning and end of the school year the whole school attend mass at our Parish Church. The Pupil Chaplaincy team and children in Key Stage 2 are responsible for the Readings and Bidding Prayers. Parents and Staff are warmly invited to attend whole school masses and celebrations.
