Autumn 1
Week Beginning 20th October 2024
This week, we had an amazing visit from Ify and Amna, two of the band members of Envie (formerly known as Dystopia), who came in to chat to Year 5 about their experiences in the music industry. The children really enjoyed their presentation and asked lots of questions about their music and their experiences. It was a fantastic insight, and a lovely way to round off Black History Month by sharing this experience with two such fantastic role models. Through the week, the children worked hard on their maths knowledge, finding common factors and multiples. In English, Year 5 finished off their independent fables, which they wrote based on the Lion and the Mouse. Everyone worked really hard to finish their Innovate Projects, which involved researching planets in the solar system, and writing a non-chronological report on one. Year 5 are steaming ahead with their guitar lessons and making excellent progress with their musical education. It was lovely to catch up with the parents during parent's evening this week, and discuss how well everyone has settled in. We wish everyone a lovely, restful half term break, and we look forward to seeing you all in November!
Week Beginning 14th October 2024
This week has been a very busy week for Year 5. We kicked off the week with a trip to the Science Museum, where we watched an incredible 3D IMAX film about our planet and the astronauts who work on the ISS. The children really enjoyed looking around the space section of the museum, and particularly loved the interactive planet. On Tuesday, we had a micro-bit workshop, in which the children used the Chromebooks to code and programme micro-bits. They then used these to play a game of conkers by fist bumping with the micro bits in their hands until the 'conkers' cracked. On Thursday, we had a recycling assembly, focused on how we can reuse and repurpose materials in our homes. We began writing our independent fables and worked hard on identifying common multiples in maths. We rounded off the week with a fantastic collective worship session, led by our Mini-Vinnies, and a Pupil Voice meeting focused on how we can do our bit to reverse climate change.
Week Beginning 7th October 2024
This week marked the beginning of our new writing focus, producing a fable, which Year 5 jumped straight into. They have spent the week analysing examples and drawing on them to plan for a fable based on The Hare and the Tortoise. In maths, we looked at using the inverse operation to check our answers, and rounding to estimate large figures. Later in the week, CAFOD came in to run a workshop with the children about Catholic Social Teaching. On top of all of that, it was space week this week, and we marked it in science by examining the daily routine of a NASA astronaut on the ISS. We then imagined ourselves as astronauts and produced a diary entry in the style of a time stamped activity log. The week was rounded off with another fantastic Year 5 assembly, this time, performed by Beech class, who shone a brilliant spotlight on Black History Month!
Week Beginning 30th September 2024
This week was another busy one for Year 5. While Ash Class were busy practising hard for their Harvest Festival Assembly, all of the children were busy working on their independent non-chronological reports. The Pupils Voice meetings are well underway by this point of the term, and the class representatives brought back the big questions from their school meeting to discuss with the class, before taking a vote on how best we can continue to support kindness and foster a caring environment across the school. In maths, we continued to consolidate our knowledge of the four operations, and in PE, we played several exciting games of Crab Football, to practise recognising the available space available on the playing field, and utilising it well. In history, the children examined the hierarchy of the Shang Dynasty in more depth, and competed in a Kahoots quiz about the daily life of the era. The week was rounded off with a fantastic assembly performance by Ash Class!
Week beginning 23rd September 2024
This week, Ash class and Beech class had a jam-packed week of learning. We worked on rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, and 10,000 in Maths, finished off our supported non-chronological reports in preparation for writing our independent drafts next wee, and had a fantastic visit form London Fire Brigade, in which the children learned about fire safety and prevention. The children presented research on religion in the Shang Dynasty, and documented the moon phases in Science. Despite the rainy weather, spirits were high as we supported our chosen charity for this half term's Catholic Social Teaching in action. The children came to school wearing green and purple, the colours of McMillan Cancer Support, and enjoyed the cake sale that was hosted by our fantastic parents! As we enter the weekend, the children gearing up for the Year 5 vs Year 6 TTRS tournament that will end on Monday morning, with the winning group earning the TTRS trophy for the week, as well as bragging rights. Well done year 5!
Week beginning 16th September 2024
Another busy week for Year 5! We began preparing to write our non-chronological report by looking at good examples, including the fantastic narrations of David Attenborough in his fantastic Planet Earth series. The children enjoyed becoming archaeologists for the morning, when digging for artefacts for our history learning about ancient Chinese dynasties. They continued their fantastic efforts in maths, consolidating their place value knowledge and using it in context, and were extra active on Wednesday, when they took part in our National Fitness Day whole school warm up. They rounded off the week, which was also coding week, by using our coding skills to learn about responsible AI use in Minecraft. Year 5 have definitely earned a restful weekend!
Week Beginning 9th September 2024
What a fantastic first week back at school for our new year 5s. We've had a very busy week back and the children have thrown themselves into all of their new learning with enthusiasm! They gave amazing poetry performances for our new reception children with original rhythmic beats and actions. The children got back into maths with work on place value, began learning about space in science, recreating the solar system on the school field, and created some art of the Yellow Emperor for our new history topic of Dynamic Dynasties. In English, the children channelled their hard work on the poetry performances into action and wrote their own, original descriptive poems. In computing, we covered systems and functions, and the children had a great times honing their netball skills in PE. Well done Year 5! Have a lovely weekend!
