Year 3 Sound Lab Workshop at the British Library
Today, Year 3 enjoyed a fantastic workshop at the British Library. After a short introduction, in which the children were astonished to learn that the British Library holds a catalogue of over 200 million prints, maps and sounds, they got to work on identifying how vinyl records, cassettes and CDs work. They earned that Thomas Edison was the first to build a machine that could record and replay sound in 1877, and had a great time making their own paper versions of his phonograph. They also made mini speakers with paper cups to augment the sound! Then, they used iPads to digitally record their own sounds, as well as import several from the British Library's catalogue. Finally, they arranged them in layers to create their own unique sounds. It was a fantastic experience and a lovely first visit to the British Library for Year 3.
