Spring 2

Week Beginning Monday 24th March 2025

This week has been assessment week for the children, as they demonstrate the knowledge they have gained so far this term. They showed maturity and focus as they completed multiple assessments, and enjoyed a welcome break in the form of a local area walk led by an expert historian. They were guided around the local area and learned about the rich history of the abbey that now lies in ruins next to the school. They spent a fantastic afternoon creating art dedicated for mother's day in a historic style, linked to the history walk, and they were visited by a researcher from Cambridge, who came to observe our computing lesson. During the session, the children used their amalgamated knowledge of algorithms, and programmed micro bits to make clothing suggestions based on the local temperature. What a fantastic week!

Week Beginning Monday 17th March 2025

This week was full of lots of fun and learning. The children wrote newspaper articles in English, ordered decimals in maths, programmed micro bits in computing, and continued developing their running technique in PE. They also began fine tuning their re-enactment of the Stations of the Cross, which will be performed for parents on Thursday 3rd April, and celebrated St Joseph's day with a school mass led by Father Paul. The children in Beech class completed the sacrament of reconciliation, following on from Ash class last week, and the celebrations were rounded off with a fantastic school disco. The week was concluded with a calm and productive Journey in Love day, in which the children discussed the big challenges and changes they were going to face in the next few years, and wrote letters to themselves with words of encouragement and support.

Week Beginning Monday 10th March 2025

This week was Science week, which meant all sorts of fun and investigation. The children had a live lesson, completed an experiment about the impact of flushing unflushable materials, and enjoyed a fantastic VR session at school! They also began focusing on equivalent fractions and decimals in maths, wrote fantastic character descriptions in English, looked at data collection and use in computing in preparation for programming micro-bits, and taste tested a variety of citrus fruits in geography, linked with the lesson on farming North and South America.

Week Beginning Monday 3rd March 2025

Another busy week for Year 5 as this week was book week, culminating in some fantastic outfits on World Book Day! We had a whole school bookmark swap. where each child made a bookmark for a school-wide event in which each child was able to choose a bookmark that someone else had made. We had a 'drop everything you're doing and read' event, an author visit and a live lesson attended by children across the nation. During all of this extra celebration of reading, we also celebrated the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday mass! Of course, we continued with our usual maths, writing, science, geography, PE, computing and French. No time to rest though, next week is Science Week!

Week beginning Monday 24th February 2025

The first week back has been a very busy one. The children kicked off the week completing an intense circuit of exercises and enjoying a motivational talk from Olympic medallist Victoria Ohuruogu. It was such a fantastic experience! In English, we started our new text, The Highwayman, a tragic poem which the children really enjoyed analysing. They looked in detail at the language and the characters, writing a descriptive paragraph about Bess. In maths, the children worked hard on multiplying fraction and using fractions as operators. In PE, the children took their baseline data for their running topic and, in geography we looked at the impact of modern farming, as well as which techniques we could use in our school allotments. A great return to school. Well done Year 5!
