Summer 1
Week Beginning Monday 19th May 2025
The final week of the half term has been a busy one! The children in Year 5 had a great experience during a visit from the Metropolitan Police, who discussed careers in the Police service with them and were very impressed with the children's questions. Everyone got the opportunity to sit in the police car and operate the sirens! The children are flying through their maths learning on angles and wrote excellent short scenes in playscript format in English this week. They experimented with creating vector drawings in computing and mapped out the more prominent city states from the Archaic Period in Ancient Greece. It's been a very busy week, and we hope everyone has a safe and restful half term. It's been well earned!
Week Beginning 12th May 2025
This week was a warm one at St Joseph's but that didn't stop the children from working incredibly hard. They wrote excellent biographies about Dr Barnardo, with links to our text, Street Child. Following from this, they planned and began writing autobiographies, including their ambitions and intended future careers. In history, the children compared the Minoans and the Mycenaeans as civilisations, as part of their Groundbreaking Greeks topic. In maths, we have moved onto angles and shapes, building on our previous learning and introducing reflex angles. Finally, today was the May procession, with the children completing the tour of the playground and laying their flowers at the feet of a crowned statue of Mary. A very busy week indeed!
Week Beginning Monday 5th May 2025
Although it was only a four day week, it was another busy one for Year 5: we wrote fantastic diary entries from the point of view of Jim from Street Child and began our maths topic on statistics, which involved looking at graphs and data tables. In PE, we continued working hard and building our stamina, and in RE, we looked at the journey of the apostles to Emmaus. The children continued their musical journey in guitar lessons with Ms Milne, and explored their creativity in Mrs Maaka's art lessons. Finally, on Thursday, the week was rounded off with a red, white and blue day to mark the anniversary of VE day.
Week Beginning Monday 28th April 2025
This week was packed full of scientific investigation, in which Year 5 explored various materials and their properties. The children also wrote excellent diary entries from the point of view of Emily, a ten-year old character in the book Street Child. In maths, they worked hard on finding the area and perimeter of various quadrilinear shapes, and in PE, they practiced their rugby passes, as well as their tactics and communication skills. Finally, the local town hall held a VE Day memorial ceremony, which four on our Year 5 children attended as representatives from our school. they were even treated to cake afterwards! Another busy week - well done Year 5!
Week beginning Monday 21st April 2025
What a fantastic week for Year 5 at school. They consolidated their learning on fractions, decimals and percentages, analysed the characters in Street Child as well at the emotions present in each scene, and they studied a non-fiction text about Ancient Greece, which links with our new history topic. In art, they examined various forms of media and then completed a paper quilling activity to practise a new medium of art, and they gave incredible support for the children who are going to run the TCS mini marathon in London this weekend. Well done Year 5!
