18.10.24 - Conductive Music Workshop
Code-Along Workshop - 17.10.24
Year 6 got their virtual binoculars out today while taking part in a birdwatching themed code-along workshop organised by charity digit<all>. They were tasked with programming the micro:bits to send radio signals symbols when they fund different native bird species around the classroom. The Year 6 children showed excellent computational thinking skills and a sound, reasoned approach to debugging problems within their code. This was an excellent activity that reminded us of real-life uses for technology. We look forward to using what we have learned in our Geography field trip after half term!
Trip to Barking Library - 15.10.24
Year 6 spent some time this afternoon at the local Barking library. We checked out the range of books and took a moment to relax and enjoy some reading for pleasure.
STEMFest in Space 2024 - 4.10.24
"Houston, we don't have a problem... only questions!" - This afternoon, Year 6 enjoyed a STEM workshop in which they heard from NASA engineer Eryn Andrews - live from Houston, Texas - about her life and achievements. We heard about her journey to becoming a NASA engineer, and how despite her challenges in life, she is now one of the most respected engineers, who has designed space suits that astronauts are able to eat in, as well as her job training astronauts. Year 6 were then presented with an opportunity to ask questions about NASA.
Educational Visit to The British Library - 26.9.24
Year 6 ventured out to The British Library for an educational visit today. On arrival, we were shown precious ancient texts that had genuine golden covers - these would have been given as gifts to monarchs of the past. Our guide then accompanied us to the learning room, where we learned about the art of ancient map making. We particularly focussed our efforts on 'The Ancient Mappe of Fairyland' by Bernard Sleigh. We research why map making was important and used old pictures and artefacts to research this map. We then discussed the best way to present our research; and decided whether online publication or print publications were the most effective form of present results.
STEM Ambassadors Workshop - 25.9.24
Today Year 6 were treated to a STEM Ambassadors workshop. In the workshop Year 6 learned about different uses of measurement and how they are crucial and might help the in future careers in STEM. For example, how to use time for knowing the start and end of jobs and length to measuring sizes accurately in the workplace.
Educational Visit to the Houses of Parliament - 13.9.24
Year 6 started their year with an incredible trip to the Houses of Parliament. They were treated to a day filled with history and were fully immersed in the workings of UK Parliament. Our knowledgeable guide treated us to an interactive video about the history of parliament, before informing Year 6 about key events in political history that have taken place in the Palace of Westminster - including a reenactment of the events of the English Civil War (starring Oak Class). We then received the full tour of the House of Commons (sadly the Lords were in session so could only peek in); walking in the footsteps of the leaders of this country. Children had the opportunity to stand at the despatch box where the Prime Minister stands. they also conducted a mock vote on the issue of school hours - deciding on 'aye' or 'no'. Following the tour we enjoyed the wildlife at lunch in St James' Park and briefly walked down Whitehall to see Downing Street and the Cabinet Office, where the workings of government happen. An excellent first visit of many this year. Well done on your knowledge, engagement and questioning of our guide Year 6!
